Climate Action Manager

What's the job?
As the Climate Action Manager, you will lead the Coast Capital's Climate Strategy Implementation, Thought Leadership and Knowledge Sharing Facilitation, and Disclosure & Impact Measurement. Acting as a climate change subject matter expert, you will provide advice and guidance to leadership and business teams to help integrate climate responsibility and leadership into all areas of the credit union. As a member of the Social Purpose Office, you will work closely with key stakeholders to advance Coast Capital's goals and measure our impact and alignment toward driving our social purpose. You will support Coast Capital in meeting our net zero commitments, including developing operational and financed greenhouse gas emission reduction plans and managing climate risks and opportunities.

 

What you'll get to do:

  • Lead the execution of Coast Capital's climate strategy as it aligns with Coast Capital's Social Purpose Impact plan and de-carbonization strategy.
  • Coordinate the assessment of the physical and transition risk and opportunities for sectors in Coast Capital's financing portfolios. 
  • Lead climate action activities that meet all Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) and B Corp commitments and ensure Coast Capital complies with regulators. 
  • Support the development of policies and programs to facilitate implementation, such as building innovative approaches to client engagement materials, internal training, toolkits and dashboards for embedding climate considerations across financing activities.
  • Advise on the strategic development of low-carbon and resilient products and services.
  • Explore opportunities to invest in sustainability projects and partnerships that drive Coast Capital's impact strategy and goals.
  • Chairs the organization's internal Climate Action Working Group
  • Act as the key liaison with NZBA, UNEP FI, PCAF, and climate consultants, actively participate in regular meetings/working groups, and ensure all NZBA and climate reporting needs are met. 
  • Acts as an expert, advising on climate trends, best practices, regulatory impacts, etc.
  • Assesses societal trends related to our social purpose and climate, including risks, opportunities, and best practices and follows market trends in ESG/Social Purpose impact valuation, transparency and disclosures, and ensures Coast follows relevant best practices
  • Leads employee engagement activities and education related to sustainability (i.e. Earth Day, sustainable commuter campaigns, partners with MODO co-op, paper-reduction campaigns, etc.)
  • Plays a key role in the delivery of the annual climate disclosures
  • Work collaboratively with the business to collect, track and monitor data related to climate reporting and disclosure (including Scope 1, 2, and 2 GHG emissions)
  • Monitors and reports on climate risk measures and how Coast Capital identifies assesses, and mitigates climate risks (aligned to OSFI B15 Climate Risk Management Guidelines)
  • Implements systems and practices to track emissions in alignment with emission reduction targets and acts as product owner and day-to-day contact of climate software and tools

 

Who are we looking for?

  • Post-Secondary or bachelor's degree with a particular focus on ESG, climate action, policy, sustainability, environmental management, business administration or a related field
  • 7 - 9 years of professional experience and at least 5 years of experience in sustainability, ESG or climate-related role
  • In-depth knowledge of reporting frameworks and methodologies, including GRI, SASB, CDP, GHG Protocol, TCFD, PCAF
  • Strong understanding of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aligning activity/reporting strategy
  • Experience with environmental management systems, ESG reporting and development of emission reduction targets and de-carbonization strategies 
  • Outstanding communicator with excellent presentation skills, strong verbal and written skills, and keen attention to detail
  • Highly organized with strong project management skills, ability to navigate a large number of stakeholders, manage simultaneous projects and drive to completion 
  • Understanding of evolving stakeholder expectations and experience engaging with a variety of stakeholders, as well as ESG rating/evaluation systems
