What’s the job?


The Paralegal will play a key role in the management, oversight and support of a variety of legal matters. The incumbent will draft contracts and other legal documents, participate in negotiations or discussions on behalf of the credit union, develop and apply organizational policies and playbooks for the handling of legal matters, conduct legal research, analyze risks and issues and provide strategic business input to stakeholders. A Paralegal provides subject matter input in relevant legal areas, which may include: contracts, corporate commercial, capital markets, corporate records, commercial lending, corporate governance, wills and estates, real estate and intellectual property.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Act as an escalation point for legal matters within delegated authority, and engage and make recommendations to relevant stakeholders for matters beyond authority
  • Instruct and provide relevant information to external counsel
  • Develop, interpret and apply organizational policies
  • Coordinate internal sign offs at the appropriate levels of authority
  • Maintain knowledge with regard to relevant legal and regulatory issues and amendments
  • Monitor legal and industry trends, new or proposed legislation and regulations that may affect Coast's activities.
  • Partners with lines of business and others on the Legal team to manage a range of legal matters and ensure that they are conducted within the applicable policies, guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Draft and analyze contracts, correspondence and other legal documents, and participate in negotiation when required
  • Develop user-friendly self-help tools, guidelines and playbooks to allow help the Legal department and business units manage routine legal matters efficiently, consistently and effectively
  • Keeps robust records and documentation of legal matters in accordance with departmental procedures
  • Manages responses to requests for information and documentation
  • Works with stakeholders to develop and support integration of new processes
  • Exercises sound judgment and problem solving skills to analyze problems and recommend solutions
  • Support and provide subject matter expertise to corporate projects and initiatives
  • Provide leadership and input to project workstreams and deliverables as required
  • Builds and maintains cross-functional relationships
  • Provides coaching, guidance and/or support to lines of business and team members to enhance competencies, knowledge and skills and mitigate risk
  • Conduct research and prepare legal memos and summaries of such research including analysis of key issues


Who are we looking for?

  • Minimum 4 – 6 Years of Job-Related Experience, in a law firm or law department with responsibilities in a relevant subject matter area. Experience in the financial services industry is an asset.
  • High School Diploma plus completion of a Diploma Program (two years of formal education or equivalent). 
  • Strong knowledge of contracts and drafting ability
  • Knowledge of legal research techniques
  • Demonstrates excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat
